-----
Today we are featuring a playful physical programming interface that teaches children logic programs without the need for literacy.
1-Cubetto l'amico robot;

-----
Children place all the instruction blocks onto the board in a set order to determine how Cubetto moves, before pressing a red button to set the robot in motion.
The goal of the game is to guide Cubetto to its destination represented by a house, a big cube, a box, or any other object of your choice.
Playing with Primo, children become gradually more familiar with this very important concept that represents the logical foundations of real programming.
Potete vedere Primo sul sito web.

KNOCK KNOCK
Knock Knock
----------
Knock Knock
Knock Knock was designed about 6 months ago for an exhibition called Touch! in Lausanne (At MUDAC, Museum of design and contemporary art). The goal of its creator, Khalil Klouche, was to create a design piece that explores the sense of touch. But I wanted to create something warmer and more likable than tablets and smartphones. Something playful and surprising.
The designer, Khalil Klouche (Master Media Design Geneva University of Art and Design (HEAD - Genève, Svizzera) wanted to use wood because it's a material people don't usually associate with technology. It helps hiding it, so people would focus on the behavior of the object instead of how it's done.
From there, the knock interface seemed like a natural gesture. Knocking on a wooden box was something he'd do even just to know if it's hollow. But it's also interesting because it allows an input/output symmetry. When a machine responds using the same language as the user, it feels like a dialogue. That symmetry is what he found most interesting in that project.
The next thing he needed in the design process, was a set of rules to set the behavior. And he thought about his childhood when he was playing with his father's calculator, trying and learning how to make some symbols to show up by pressing random keys.
Knock knock is not really a calculator, because the designer does not expect kids to know what they're doing by knocking on its surface. It's a toy with which they should be able to slowly decipher its mysterious behavior by "discussing" with it. And another thing he found important is the duration of the answers. Having to wait for 72 knocks makes you really feel how 72 is bigger than 15, whereas visually it's not obvious.
The look of it comes from swiss graphic design and typography tradition. Making it minimal allowed him to focus on its proportions and functionality, and the monolithic design makes it look like an old toy.
Technical details:
Under the surface there are 4 microphones listening inside 4 separate (vacuum formed) compartments. When a knock is detected, the microphone recording the strongest signal determines which quadrant was knocked. The signal is then processed by an arduino board that I programmed, which triggers the response. The result is then knocked by an electromagnet (an rod moving inside a solenoid) onto the surface right in the middle. The whole thing is powered by a 9v battery. The box is simply made of plain wood panels.
Some behavior details:
Negative results are returned as positive numbers (it returns only absolute values).
It handles only integer numbers, so divisions return only the integer part.
Zero triggers a little rhythm (instead of doing nothing).
If a result is bigger than 100, it returns 0.
Do you like it and would love to buy one? Sorry to inform you that Khalil does not see that project like a product he could sell. For him it's an exercise in quick prototyping and an element of research I can show and discuss with others.
The designer:
Khalil Klouche is a graphic designer and typographer in Geneva since 2006 but he has always been interested in programming and using technology. Two years ago he decided to try something new by starting a Master Curriculum (At Geneva University of Art and Design) and the first thing that struck him was how easy it had become, using open source technology and fab-lab tools, to prototype an idea. Today it's possible to sketch an idea by quickly crafting an actual object to interact with.
For two years he crafted playful devices to explore new ways of interacting. "Laser Cabinet - A Chalet Arcade", was made right before "Knock Knock" and recently presented at the Game Gazer exhibition at Swissnex in San Francisco.
He recently realized "Manège à trois", a playful installation in collaboration with Chris Reilly and Alex Rickett, two UCLA Game Lab students. Those two projects were selected by Eddo Stern to be presented at the UCLA Game Festival at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles in May.

THE GOOD OLD DAYS

----
Yeah, school is over, let's think about it again in September, but....we feel sure that seeing the objects offered by Present and Correct will make you feel immediately the desire to purchase stationery items, to fill the backpacks of your children with notebooks, pencil sharpeners, rulers ...
Present and Correct has been online since 2008 and offers a wide range of wonderful objects, which are colorful, basic, look vaguely retro, and of which you won't be able to live without!
Why do we like the owners of Present and Correct? Well, they are both graphic designers and they go on sourcing trips around four times a year with the hope of finding some vintage gems. For the rest of the time they think of new ideas, eat a lot and generally have a nice time.
We feel sure that these objects will arouse a distant, languid remind of the good old days (those in which The desks in the classrooms had a circular hole for the ink well!)
