It's called "yarn-bombing" the new form of contemporary art that is spreading throughout the world.
Thousands of people are invited to work together in order to decorate their city.
The colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre can be used on the arm of a bench, the post of a road sign, a mailbox, a public telephone, but there are now many examples of yarn bombing of colossal dimensions, which have covered in colorful knit monuments, cars and even bridges.
The start of this movement has been attributed to Magda Sayeg, who owns a clothing store in Houston and who decided to cover the door handle of her boutique with a custom-made cozy. Customers highly appreciated her creations, so she decided to bring these decorations also outside the store in order to embellish the city and in a short time the yarn bombing widespread all over the world!

One of the last Yarn Bombing has taken place in August in Pittsburg Pennsylvania, where a 325 mt long bridge has been crocheted. Knit the Bridge is a grassroots, community-led arts project that brings the many diverse communities of Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania together to create a large-scale, aesthetically stunning, fiberarts installation on the Andy Warhol/7th Street Bridge. The installation will be on view from August 12th until September 6th, 2013.
